6 Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Coffee culture today is hugely popular, with cafes peppering the streets of every town and city. It tastes divine, smells amazing, and also has many positive effects on the mind and body. Such benefits include helping weight loss and even possibly prolonging your life.

1. Alertness boost

One of the main and most well-known effects from drinking coffee is the increased levels of alertness in the body. This is due to the stimulant caffeine found in the drink, which makes you feel less tired and helps you concentrate more. It can even improve reaction time and motor coordination.

2. Mood enhancer

With the boost in awareness comes a boost in your mood. Coffee invigorates the mind and leaves you feeling happy and full of energy. Harvard researchers studied depression rates among women and found that coffee helped lower the rates. Additionally, the coffee culture that is so popular today encourages you to go outside and be social, improving your wellness levels tremendously.

3. Increased metabolism

Alongside the effect of alertness, is an increased metabolism. Dr Bob Arnot explains, “First, there’s an increase in metabolic effect. You’re going to burn 100 more calories a day by drinking coffee than if you haven’t. Second, if you have coffee before your workout, you’re burning many more free fatty acids.”

4. More efficient workouts

As Arnot outlines above, coffee aids in weight loss, even more so if coupled with regular exercise. Instead of using the body’s glycogen reserves, coffee encourages muscles to burn fat, which doesn’t make them tire as easily as opposed to when they use glycogen. Such a coffee fueled workout will be less painful and last much longer in comparison to a non-coffee fueled workout, although caffeine effects every person differently.

5. Aids the body fight diseases

Coffee has the same antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables and red wine, alongside possessing an anti-inflammatory effect. “The more caffeine people consumed, the more protected they were against a chronic state of inflammation,” says David Furman, consulting associate professor at Stanford University. Inflammation can lead to many major diseases, and drinking coffee is said to lower the levels of inflammation in the body, thus lowering the risk of contracting such diseases.

6. Good for the heart

A study conducted in South Korea has uncovered that drinking coffee daily may decrease the risk of clogged arteries, leading to less chances of heart disease. The study discovered that coffee-drinkers were less likely to have blood clots that can trigger heart attacks, since they had less coronary calcium in their arteries, which leads to the hardening and narrowing of the arteries. However, the study outlines, “Our study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that coffee consumption might be inversely associated with CVD [cardiovascular disease] risk. Further research is warranted to confirm our findings and establish the biological basis of coffee’s potential preventive effects on coronary artery disease.”

As with all things, such research needs to be taken with a pinch of caution. “More research is needed to confirm these findings and understand what the reason is for the association,” says Victoria Taylor of the British Heart Foundation. So don’t start gulping gallons of coffee just yet.
